School No. 43 is a friendly, child-centered school located at Mt. Read Boulevard and Lyell Avenue in the southwest area of Rochester. Our focus is on literacy: helping every student learn to read by the end of grade 3. We use the Wilson Fundations phonemic awareness program in grade K-3 and the Wilson Remedial Reading program in the intermediate grades (4-6) to advance students’ reading skills. School No. 43 has been named a New York State “School in Good Standing” and was one of New York State’s Most Improved Schools (2003). We have also been celebrated for our progress in closing the achievement gap for our students.

  • Uses the America’s Choice educational reform model to help all students meet or exceed standards in reading, writing and math.

  • Offers the Major Achievement Program (MAP), which provides students with opportunities for acceleration and enrichment in grades 4 through 6.

  • Has an ESOL program for students learning English as a second language.

  • Is an Arts Magnet school with a focus on instrumental music, vocal chorus and drama. Activities in the arts support national standards in literacy. Chorus and Artists-in-Residence programs bring artists, musicians, authors and storytellers to our school. Strong students are supported in the application process for School of the Arts with after-school instruction.

  • Has two portable, internet-ready laptop labs for K-6 use and computers available in our library. Teachers may be contacted via e-mail.

  • Has education partnerships with Arch Chemical Corp., Global Crossing, Rochester Kiwanis, and R&R Industries, and volunteer tutors and mentors for students from Nazareth College, SUNY Geneseo, St. John Fisher College, and SUNY Brockport.

  • Offers an after-school program Monday through Friday through the City of Rochester Recreation Department. Offers extended-day programs in language arts, math and social studies for grades 3-6.

  • Positive Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) program strengthens both character development and writing skills. Students are recognized and rewarded throughout the year for academic achievement, personal growth, positive behavior, and good citizenship. Peer mediation and conflict resolution programs and school-wide Code of Conduct (PAWS) support a positive school atmosphere.

  • Has an active Parent Teacher Association and parent volunteers that support activities including Math Nights, Family Bingo and Family Fun Nights, recognition ceremonies, fundraising, Principal’s Book of the Month, 25 Book Campaign, Prime Time Reading (support for parents in reading with their children), and Grizzlies basketball team.

  • Monthly “Breakfast with the Principal” helps parents become comfortable in coming to school to voice concerns.
