School No. 9 Partnership with Episcopal Church Tutors To Be Celebrated

A 10-year partnership between volunteers from the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School No. 9 will be celebrated tomorrow, Friday, May 30 at the school, 485 N. Clinton Avenue, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Tutors from six Episcopal parishes work with kindergartners to develop literacy skills and a foundation for learning to help them meet New York State academic standards.

A presentation on the partnership will be given at 9:00 a.m. by Liz Cook, coordinator of the School No. 9 Outreach Program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and School No. 9 Principal Sharon Jackson. Visitors will then be invited to visit kindergarten classrooms throughout the morning and observe the program in action.

In attendance will be student Hanan Allen, former participant in the tutoring program and now an eighth-grade student at Wilson Foundation Academy.

Officials from the Episcopal Church will also be on hand including the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the National Episcopal Church, who is in Rochester for the May 31 consecration of the 8th Bishop of Rochester.
