Students from Monroe High School including members of the National Honor Society will participate in the installation of a public art project called “Word Play.”
The installation will take place Thursday, May 29 at 2:30 p.m. on the wrought-iron fence in front of Monroe High School, 164 Alexander Street. A reception will take place at 5:00 p.m.
Conceived by artist and Monroe graduate Jan Feldman, the project involves word tiles that will be affixed to the fence to form short phrases, resembling word magnets attached to a refrigerator. Members of the Monroe High School neighborhood were invited to participate in poetry workshops and discussions to decide on the words for the tiles.
The visual art project uses the rhythmic pattern of words to express residents’ collective ideas about their neighborhood.
“Acting like a community billboard, it can be viewed from the road or the sidewalk, drawing attention to the artistic energy and colorful culture of this creative neighborhood,” said Feldman, who graduated from Monroe and also attended School No. 23 in Rochester.
