Student Artists Earn Recognition, Public Display of Works

An elementary artist and a high school artist from the Rochester City School District have been chosen to have their works displayed publicly, one locally and the other in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

Depicting Fire Safety

Shatiana Hilarski, a fifth-grade student at Pinnacle School No. 35, won the fire safety poster contest sponsored by the Rochester Fire Department and the RCSD Arts Department. Shatiana’s work was selected from among entries submitted by 104 students from 13 schools.

Her poster has been enlarged into a billboard that will be unveiled at a ceremony tomorrow, Friday, May 30, at 10:45 a.m. on Clinton Avenue near the Highland Diner. Shatiana will receive a bike and helmet from the Fire Department and her class at School No. 35 will receive a pizza party.

Congressional Honor

Sarah Rebholz, a senior at Wilson Magnet High School, was the local winner of the 2008 Congressional Art Competition. Her artwork, entitled “No Woman, No Cry”, will be on display in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol for one year beginning next month. The RCSD was invited to participate in the competition by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, co-chair of the Arts Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Sarah will be recognized for her achievement at Wilson’s Awards Night on Thursday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wilson Commencement Academy campus, 501 Genesee Street. In the fall, she will be attending Illinois Institute of Technology where she will major in Aerospace Engineering.
