In 1998, the Rochester City School District became the second school district in the United States to participate in the international Virtual Enterprise program.

Through Virtual Enterprise, students learn about the business world by creating and running their own virtual companies, known as practice firms. Students serve as the management and employees of their practice firms and conduct business with other student-run firms from around the world via the Internet. Although there is no actual transfer of goods or money, students conduct all the usual activities involved in operating a business.

Through hands-on applications, Virtual Enterprise improves students' skills in problem solving and communications and conveys the expectations of the workplace. Students apply academic and work-related knowledge learned in class to real-world business situations.

Virtual Enterprise is offered in all Rochester high schools.
