Do you believe that children should receive encouragement, yet also be helped to recognize clear boundaries? We do! At School No. 50 we honor and celebrate success. We also promote a common belief that we should all respect and protect ourselves, others, and the things around us. We want to build character while we build brainpower. We value working together, and seek avenues to promote both student and staff development as a diverse population with common goals.
Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50:
- Uses the ATLAS school-reform model to support student achievement through shared decision-making and focused study of student learning.
- Offers special programs such as the Major Achievement Program (MAP) for grades 4-6, Learning English through Academic Program (LEAP) for grades K-3, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for all grades.
- Has an active PTA which hosts such events as Multicultural Night, Math Night, Muffins with Mom, Donuts with Dad, and Fall & Spring Fundraisers.
- Provides extracurricular activities such as Chorus, Band, D.R.U.M., Recorders, Safety Patrol, Storytelling, and Student Council.
- Maintains a Computer Lab and mobile laptop computer stations which help integrate technology into the curriculum. We offer numerous computer programs like Accelerated Reader, LEXIA, KidBiz, KidSpiration, Earobics, Compass Learning, and TumbleBooks.
- Enjoys a partnership with Nazareth College. Future teachers assist in our classrooms and tutor some of our struggling students.
- Hosts an after-school program for students run by the Boys and Girls Club.
- Offers Saturday School for students who need extra time to meet ELA and math goals.
- Follows the Olweus Anti-Bullying/Anti-Violence approach. Our "Respect and Protect" student behavior model conducts weekly classroom meetings and celebrates monthly character traits.
- Supports children and families with healthy responses to stress through Project Resilience, P.A.Th.S., Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Get Real About Violence, and I Can Problem Solve.
